“Figurative illustrations showing elaborate festivals of dancing and music dominate Islamic book decoration T or F”

http://www.iis.ac.uk/view_article.asp?ContentID=105133

I say FALSE because, if this site is any indicator, it would mean that it did NOT dominate although it was included.

~~~~~~~~
“Before 1000AD miniature paintings appeared in Persian books and became an important part of book illumination T or F”
FALSE
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_miniature
“Miniature painting became a significant Persian form in the 13th century, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th
and 16th centuries.”
~~~~~~~~

“Early Islamic calligraphers made their vowel marks ornate and used rosettes to separate verses, thus leading to Islamic ornamentation T or F”

I say TRUE. Whether rosettes or specifically vowels were ornately drawn is left to the general terminology here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_calligraphy#Calligrams

“In the teachings of calligraphy, figurative imagery is used to help visualize the shape of letters to trace…”

~~~~~~~~
“Gothic tendency toward abstraction and stylized imagery was reversed in late medieval manuscripts T or F”
I say TRUE.
Pg. 205
“Here it has been rebuilt as a shoddy “modern gothic”"
“But the place of the Gothic seems to be reversed. In the narrative’s reflection on Jude’s ignorance, the Gothic is allied with medievalism, with the stragled vitality of an older age…”
The Freehand Technique: Open the Door to New Rhythmic Possibilies [VHS]
The Freehand Technique is more than just a one-handed roll. It allows drummers to play 16th notes, triplets, and virtually any rhythmic value with one hand by using the rim as a fulcrum. For example, you can play 16th note triplets with the right hand, keeping the left hand free to play grooves on a cowbell. Both hands are now completely independent and able to play unlimited rhythms.
Excerpt: Clement Matchett’s Virginal Book is a musical manuscript from the late renaissance compiled by a young Norfolk man in 1612. Although a small anthology , it is notable not only for the quality of its music but also for the precise fingering indications that reveal the contemporary treatment of phrasing and articulation . Moreover, the manuscript is unusual in that each piece bears the exact date of its copying.The Manuscript The manuscript consists of a small oblong quarto measuring some 15 by 19 centimetres. It is in excellent condition and retains its original binding formed from several sheets of rough paper folded, pasted and stitched to a strip of vellum to form the spine . The manuscript contains 32 leaves bearing two pairs of hand-ruled six-line staves on which are twelve short pieces written in a neat hand .On the first of the two front flyleaves is the inscription: Clement Matchett ownes this booke 1613 , with a table of contents on the verso . The second flyleaf bears a Guidonian hand figuring the Gamut . The end flyleaf bears some doggerel rhyme. The manuscript is precisely dated on the inside back cover: Iste liber per me Clement Matchett eiusdem possessorem compositus fuit in Anno Domini 1612/mense augustaneo/1612 .The manuscript is now in the collections of Panmure House in Aberdeen (Scotland ), the seat of the Ramsays of Dalhousie , under catalogue number En 9448. It is possible that the manuscript found its way to Scotland through one Duncan Burnett (circa 1590-1651), a Glasgow musician whose own music book is also in the Panmure House collection, and who may have been related to another Duncan Burnett, physician of Norwich, birthplace of Clement Matchett himself.The Author Clement Matchett was born in Norwich , Norfolk , in 1593, the son of a
Excerpt: Claudio Monteverdi item Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (SV 325, The Return of Ulysses to his Homeland ) is an opera in a prologue and five acts (later revised to three), set by Claudio Monteverdi to a libretto by Giacomo Badoaro . The opera was first performed at the Teatro Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice during the 1639 1640 carnival season. The story, taken from the second half of Homer’s Odyssey , tells how constancy and virtue are ultimately rewarded, treachery and deception overcome. After his long journey home from the Trojan Wars Ulisse, king of Ithaca , finally returns to his kingdom where he finds that a trio of villainous suitors have seized the realm and are importuning his faithful queen, Penelope . With the assistance of the gods, his son Telemaco and a staunch friend Eumete, Ulisse vanquishes the suitors and recovers his kingdom.Il ritorno is the first of three full-length works which Monteverdi wrote for the burgeoning Venetian opera industry during the last five years of his life. After its initial successful run in Venice the opera was performed in Bologna before returning to Venice for the 1640 41 season. Thereafter, except for a possible performance at the Imperial court in Vienna late in the 17th century, there were no further revivals until the 20th century. The music became known in modern times through the 19th century discovery of an incomplete manuscript score which differs in many respects from the surviving versions of the libretto. After its publication in 1922 the score’s authenticity
It was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo and paired with a gigue in the same key . Like most other works by Pachelbel and other pre-1700 composers, the Canon remained forgotten for centuries and was rediscovered only in the 20th century. Several decades after it was first published in 1919, the piece became extremely popular, and today it is frequently played at weddings and included on classical music compilations, along with other famous Baroque pieces such as Air on the G String by Johann Sebastian Bach .History of composition and publication Although Pachelbel was renowned in his lifetime for his chamber works (contemporary sources praise his serenades and sonatas), most of them were lost. Only Musikalische Ergötzung , a collection of partitas published during Pachelbel’s lifetime, is known, and a few isolated pieces in manuscripts. Canon and Gigue in D major is one of such pieces. A single manuscript copy of it survives, Mus.MS 16481 in the Berlin State Library , which contains two more chamber suites; another copy, previously kept in Hochschule der Künste in Berlin , is now lost. The circumstances of the piece’s composition are wholly unknown. One writer
Excerpt: Servaes de Koninck, or Servaes de Konink, Servaas de Koninck or Servaas de Konink (c. 1654 c. 1701) was a baroque composer from the Netherlands, of motets, Dutch songs, chamber and incidental music, French airs and Italian cantatas. De Koninck was born at either Dendermonde or Ghent (Flanders). From 1663 to 1665, he was a boy chorister at St. James Church in Ghent. In 1675, he became a student at the University of Leuven. Around 1680, he lived in Brussels. About 1685, he took up residence in Amsterdam in the Dutch Republic, where he had been preceded by another composer from the Southern Netherlands, Carolus Hacquart. He dwelled in circles connected to the Amsterdam Theatre and he probably worked later on as an independent musician in Amsterdam. He was a music teacher at Lucie Quarters French girls school. Between 1696 and 1699, he issued seven opus numbers, published by Estienne Roger in Amsterdam: two volumes of sonatas for one and two flutes with and without basso continuo, the tragedy Athalie by Jean Racine of which De Koninck set the choirs to music (1697), two volumes of trios, the Hollandsche Minne- en Drinkliederen (also from 1697) and a volume of motets (1699). The short period of time in which Roger published the opus numbers, suggests that a number of compositions might have been completed previously and had only been waiting for a publisher. Apart from this collection, a number of compositions are kept in manuscript and print. De Koninck died in Amsterdam in 1701. De Koninck was one of a group of four Amsterdam composers of foreign origin who, in the period around 1700, contributed to the temporary flowering of Dutch vocal music and whose names are linked to the bookseller Cornelis Sweerts and the poet Abraham Alewijn. The main part of the collection is a cycle of 20 preludes and fugues in different keys , so Ariadne musica is considered an important precursor to Johann Sebastian Bach ‘s Well-Tempered Clavier , which has a similar structure.The title refers to the Greek myth in which Theseus is able to find his way out of Minotaur ‘s labyrinth using a ball of thread Ariadne , daughter of King Minos of Crete , gave him. Similarly, the music in the collection can be said to guide the listener through a labyrinth of keys. Fischer also used Greek mythology to name the pieces in another large scale music collection of his, Musikalischer Parnassus .The first edition of Ariadne musica was made in 1702 in Schlackenwerth . The work was reprinted several times during Fischer’s life. The original print mentioned by Johann Gottfried Walther in Musicalisches Lexicon is now lost, but a manuscript copy survives.Pieces 20 preludes and fugues:5 ricercars on chorale melodies, each connected with a specific catholic event:All pieces are quite short, including a few really brief fugues (the 7 bar A minor fugue being the shortest). Most are in common time , with a few exceptions (most notably the E Dorian fugue which is in 12/8). The preludes vary from pieces based on short simplistic toccata -like passages over long sustained chords (as in, for example, the C major and G major ones) to slightly more complex works with brief imitative passages like this one, from the end of the E-flat major prelude:The fugues are all in four voices, except the A-flat major one which is a five voice fugue. Some are loosely connected thematically to the accompanying preludes.The ricercars all feature themes
Excerpt: The Christmas Oratorio (German: ) BWV 248, is an oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach intended for performance in church during the Christmas season. It was written for the Christmas season of 1734 incorporating music from earlier compositions, including three secular cantatas written during 1733 and 1734 and a now lost church cantata, BWV 248a. The date is confirmed in Bach’s autograph manuscript. The next performance was not until 17 December 1857 by the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin under Eduard Grell. The Christmas Oratorio is a particularly sophisticated example of parody music. The author of the text is unknown, although a likely collaborator was Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander). The work belongs to a group of three oratorios written towards the end of Bach’s career in 1734 and 1735 for major feasts, the others being the Ascension Oratorio (BWV 11) and the Easter Oratorio (BWV 249). All include a tenor Evangelist as narrator and parody earlier compositions, although the Christmas Oratorio is by far the longest and most complex work. The oratorio is in six parts, each part being intended for performance on one of the major feast days of the Christmas period. The piece is often presented as a whole or split into two equal parts. The total running time for the entire work is nearly three hours. The first part (for Christmas Day) describes the Birth of Jesus, the second (for December 26) the annunciation to the shepherds, the third (for December 27) the adoration of the shepherds, the fourth (for New Year’s Day) the circumcision and naming of Jesus, the fifth (for the first Sunday after New Year) the journey of the Magi, and the sixth (for Epiphany) the adoration of the Magi. The structure of the story is defined to a large extent by the part… More:
Chapters: Conservati Fedele, a Chart of Biography, Symphony No. 4, Sonata for Keyboard Four-Hands K.19d, Apostolicum Pascendi Minis, Va, Dal Furor Portata. Excerpt: Conservati fedele (K. 23) is a concert aria for soprano and orchestra by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart composed the aria in October 1765 while staying at The Hague during the family’s British-European tour, when he was nine years old. Both of the Mozart children, Wolfgang and his sister Nannerl, were quite ill at the time. It was slightly revised in January 1766, possibly for a performance for Princess Carolina of Orange-Nassau. In his list of Wolfgang’s works which he started in 1768 in Vienna, his father Leopold entered this piece as no. 2 of 15 Italian Arias, composed in London and The Hague (German: ). The Newberry Library (Case MS 6A, 48), Chicago, acquired the manuscript (6 sheets, 11 pages) through a bequest of the opera singer Claire Dux Mrs Charles H. Swift (18851967 in Chicago). It was previously owned by Raphael Georg Kiesewetter who gave the autograph to Aloys Fuchs as a gift. Both Fuchs and Abbé Maximilian Stadler confirmed its authenticity with their signatures on 7 December 1832. The Neue Mozart-Ausgabe also mentions an autograph (4 sheets, 7 pages) at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in its Malherbe collection. The text is taken from Metastasio’s libretto Artaserse which had been set to music by a number of composers, among them Johann Christian Bach whom Mozart had met just a short time before in London. Metastasio’s libretti have been set to music by a large number of composers. Mozart’s largest work based on a Metastasio text was his last opera, La clemenza di Tito, as was his earlier Il re pastore. The lyrics chosen by Mozart are the parting verses of Artaserse’… More:
 A Death in the Family
A Death in the Family
$15
Forty years after its original publication, James Agee’s last novel seems, more than ever, an American classic. For in his lyrical, sorrowful account of a man’s death and its impact on his family, Agee painstakingly created a small world of domestic happiness and then showed how quickly and casually it could be destroyed.On a sultry summer night in 1915, Jay Follet leaves his house in Knoxville, Tennessee, to tend to his father, whom he believes is dying. The summons turns out to be a false alarm, but on his way back to his family, Jay has a car accident and is killed instantly. Dancing back and forth in time and braiding the viewpoints of Jay’s wife, brother, and young son, Rufus, Agee creates an overwhelmingly powerful novel of innocence, tenderness, and loss that should be read aloud for the sheer music of its prose. An utterly individual and original book…one of the most deeply worked out expressions of human feeling that I have ever read. Alfred Kazin, The New York Times It is, in the full sense, poetry…The language of the book, at once luminous and discreet…remains in the mind. On his return trip, he is killed in an auto accident.  A Gift of Madrigals and Motets, Volume 2: Transcription
A Gift of Madrigals and Motets, Volume 2: Transcription
$111.59
Near the end of the third decade of the sixteenth century, a five-volume set of madrigal and motet partbooks was assembled in Florence and sent as a gift–or musical embassy –to the English court of Henry VIII. The manuscript set–minus the missing altus part–has been owned since 1935 by the Newberry Library in Chicago; but until H. Colin Slim’s exhaustive efforts, no thorough study of the history or contents of the partbooks had been undertaken. At first encounter, these partbooks yield no clues concerning their provenance, their composers’ names, or the reasons for their dispatch to England. In his search for this information, Professor Slim used the musicologists’ customary tools, namely, biobibliography, concordances, and textual and musical analysis. But he also used bibliographers’ tools not always employed by musicologists: watermarks, bindings, script, orthography, and illuminations. As a result of his efforts, the author was able to identify nearly all the works’ composers and the manuscripts’ expert illuminator. He also presents a detailed description of the binding process and the probably background of the scribe, places the political and social references in the works, and determines the route the volumes may have taken after they left Henry’s library. By placing the date of the partbooks’ arrival in England around 1528, Professor Slim suggests that the musical culture of the early Tudor court was less French than has hitherto been thought. Indeed, the presence of the partbooks in Henry’s library makes them the earliest evidence of the Italian madrigal in England. The author also provides new and significant data on the artistic and historical position ofPhilippe Verdelot, the partbooks’ most extensively represented composer. In Volume II, Professor Slim has transcribed the music of the thirty motets and thirty madrigals for modern performance. The parts are cantus, tenor, bassus, and quintus et VI; the altus partbook is missing. Conc
 A History of the Oratorio
A History of the Oratorio
$120.95
Howard Smither has written the first definitive work on the history of the oratorio since Arnold Schering published his Geschichte des Oratoriums in 1911. This volume is the first of a four-volume comprehensive study that offers a new synthesis of what is known to date about the oratorio.Volume 1, divided into three parts, opens with the examination of the medieval, Renaissance, and early Baroque antecedents and origins of the oratorio, with emphasis on Rome and Philip Neri’s Congregation of the Oratory and with special attention to the earliest works for which the term oratorio seems appropriate. The second part recounts the development of the oratorio in Italy, circa 1640-1720. It reviews the social contexts, patrons, composers, poets, librettos, and music of the oratorio in Italy, especially in Vienna and Paris.The procedure adapted throughout the work is to treat first the social context, particularly the circumstances of performance of the oratorio in a given area and period, then to treat the libretto, and finally the music. For each geographic area and period, the author has selected for special attention a few oratorios that appear to be particularly important or representative. He has verified the information offered in the specialized literature whenever possible by reference to the music or documents. In a number of areas, particular seventeenth-century Italy, in which relatively few previous studies have been undertaken or secondary sources have proven to be inadequate, the author has examined the primary sources in manuscript and printed form–music, librettos, and documents of early oratorio history. Impressive research and intelligent integration of disparateelements make this complicated, diffuse subject both readable and accessible to the student of music.Volume 2, The Oratorio in the Baroque Era: Protestant Germany and England, and Volume 3, The Oratorio in the Classical Era, continue and expand the study of oratorio history. Larry Brown has been a force in American literature since taking critics by storm with his debut collection, Facing the Music, in 1988. His subsequent work—five novels, another story collection, and two books of nonfiction—continued to bring extraordinary praise and national attention to the writer New York Newsday called a "master."In November 2004, Brown sent the nearly completed manuscript of his sixth novel to his literary agent. A week later, he died of a massive heart attack. He was fifty-three years old.A Miracle of Catfish is that novel. Brown’s trademarks—his raw detail, pared-down prose, and characters under siege—are all here. This beautiful, heartbreaking anthem to the writer’s own North Mississippi land and the hard-working, hard-loving, hard-losing men it spawns is the story of one year in the lives of five characters—an old farmer with a new pond he wants stocked with baby catfish; a bankrupt fish pond stocker who secretly releases his forty-pound brood catfish into the farmer’s pond; a little boy from the trailer home across the road who inadvertently hooks the behemoth catfish; the boy’s inept father; and a former convict down the road who kills a second time to save his daughter.That Larry Brown died so young, and before he could see A Miracle of Catfish published, is a tragedy. That he had time to enrich the legacy of his work with this remarkable book is a blessing.
A New Chronology of Venetian Opera and Related Genres, 1660-1760
$85
From 1637 to the middle of the eighteenth century, Venice was the world center for operatic activity. No exact chronology of the Venetian stage during this period has previously existed in any language. This reference work, the culmination of two decades of research throughout Europe, provides a secure ordering of 800 operas and 650 related works from the period 1660 to 1760. Derived from thousands of manuscript news-sheets and other unpublished materials, the Chronology provides a wealth of new information on about 1500 works. Each entry in this production-based survey provides not only perfunctory reference information but also a synopsis of the text, eyewitness accounts, and pointers to surviving musical scores. What emerges, in addition to secure dates, is a profusion of new information about events, personalities, patronage, and the response of opera to changing political and social dynamics. Appendixes and supplements provide basic information in Venetian history for music, drama, and theater scholars who are not specialists in Italian studies.
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Ambrosiana at Harvard: New Sources of Milanese Chant
$35
This collection of ten essays constitutes the proceedings of a two-day conference held at Harvard in October 2007. The conference focused on three medieval manuscripts of Ambrosian chant owned by Houghton Library. The Ambrosian liturgy and its music, practiced in and around medieval Milan, were rare regional survivors of the Catholic Church’s attempt to adopt a universal Roman liturgy and the chant now known as Gregorian. Two of the manuscripts under scrutiny had been recently acquired (one perhaps the oldest surviving source of Ambrosian music), and the third manuscript, long held among the Library’s collections of illuminated manuscripts, had been newly identified as Ambrosian.The generously illustrated essays gathered here represent the work of established experts and younger scholars. Together they explore the manuscripts as physical objects and place them in their urban and historical contexts, as well as in the musical and ecclesiastical context of Milan, Italy, and medieval Europe.
$19.99
Dr. Lawrence Golan’s edition of Bach’s masterpieces for solo violin combines the authenticity and accuracy of a Scholarly Urtext Edition with the practicality and helpfulness of a Performing Edition. A facsimile of Bach’s autograph manuscript was used in the preparation of this edition and the composer’s intentions have been preserved to the last detail. Of particular note is the fact that all stems have been beamed together as they appear in the autograph manuscript. This is of great importance when making interpretive decisions regarding dotted rhythms. Helpful fingering and bowing suggestions are provided by the editor, but are clearly distinguished from Bach’s original notation, allowing the performer the freedom to accept or reject any given suggestion. The volume comes complete with Dr. Golan’s essay “Performing Bach: Dotted Rhythms and Trills in the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin,” which also includes scholarly discussions of vibrato, fingerings, bowing styles, and ritardandos in Baroque music. The inclusion of this comprehensive study of Baroque performance practices makes this edition a must for any violinist interested in performing the Bach Sonatas and Partitas in an historically informed manner.
 Book of Music (The I Tatti Renaissance Library)
Book of Music (The I Tatti Renaissance Library)
$25.79
Between 1485 and 1492 Cardinal Ascanio Sforza was the recipient of a music treatise composed for him by “Florentius Musicus” (Florentius de Faxolis), who had served him in Naples and Rome. Now in Milan, the richly illuminated small parchment codex bears witness to the musical interests of the cardinal, himself an avid singer taught by Duke Ercole d’Este. Florentius, whose treatise, found in no other source, is edited here for the first time, evidently took the cardinal’s predilections into account, for the Book on Music is unusual for its emphasis on “the praises, power, utility, necessity, and effect of music”: he devotes far more space to citations from classical and medieval authors than is the norm, and his elevated style shows that he aspires to appear as a humanist and not merely a technician. Likewise, the production quality of the manuscript indicates the acceptance of music’s place within the high culture of the Quattrocento. The author’s unusual insights into the musical thinking of his day are discussed in the ample commentary. The editors, a Renaissance musicologist (Bonnie Blackburn) and a classical scholar (Leofranc Holford-Strevens), have combined their disciplines to pay close attention both to Florentius’ text and to his teachings.
Chapters: Red River Valley, Alouette, the Unicorn, Land of the Silver Birch, Huron Carol, the Mummers’ Dance, Canada-I-O, Farewell to Nova Scotia, Lady Franklin’s Lament, Heart of the House, Navy Island Gold. Excerpt: Red River Valley is a folk song and cowboy music standard of controversial origins that has gone by different namese.g., “Cowboy Love Song”, “Bright Sherman Valley”, “Bright Laurel Valley”, “In the Bright Mohawk Valley”, and “Bright Little Valley”depending on where it has been sung. It is listed as Roud Folk Song Index 756, and by Edith Fowke as FO 13. It is recognizable by its chorus (with several variations): From this valley they say you are going.We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile,For they say you are taking the sunshineThat has brightened our pathway a while.So come sit by my side if you love me.Do not hasten to bid me adieu.Just remember the Red River Valley,And the one that has loved you so true. Edith Fowke offers anecdotal evidence that the song was known in at least five Canadian provinces before 1896. This finding led to speculation that the song was composed at the time of the Wolseley Expedition to the northern Red River Valley of 1870 in Manitoba. It expresses the sorrow of a local girl or woman (possibly a Métis, meaning of French and aboriginal origin) as her soldier/lover prepares to return to Ontario. The earliest written manuscript of the lyrics, titled “Red River Valley”, bears the notations 1879 and 1885 in locations Nemha and Harlan in western Iowa, so it probably dates to at least that era. The song appears in sheet music, titled “In the Bright Mohawk Valley”, printed in New York in 1896 with James J. Kerrigan as the writer. In 1925, Carl T. Sprague, an early singing cowboy from Texas, recorded it as “C… More:
 Cistercian Art and Architecture in the British Isles
Cistercian Art and Architecture in the British Isles
$45
From their introduction in the early twelfth century the Cistercians were one of the leading monastic orders in Britain. Many of the finest monastic remains – Fountains, Rievaulx and Tintern – are Cistercian. This 1986 book is a comprehensive survey of Cistercian art and architecture in the British Isles. The various contributions, all by leading specialists, cover the historical and literary background; the development of Cistercian architecture (especially in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, when the Cistercians were in the forefront of architectural achievement, playing an important role in the introduction and dissemination of the Gothic style); and art forms such as wall painting, stained glass, tile pavements, and manuscript illumination, as well as liturgy and music. These studies reveal what was distinctively Cistercian in the art and architecture of the Order, and permit a distinct understanding of the remarkable contribution of the Cistercians to the culture of medieval Britain.
 Communication D'Esprit-De-Bois
Communication D’Esprit-De-Bois
$20.15
This book began its journey for publication in 2007. It came about as a result of a personal request from one of the author’s student and from the suggestion of a septuagenarian, former French linguistic and diction professor, to edit and publish the first draft of the manuscript the author wrote in the late 1980′s and had set aside. The purpose of publishing such poetry is to allow it to become lyrics as a dedication to music. The rhythms found in the text speak for themselves, inasmuch as their rimes, and do so in substance and intelligence creating a symphony. The spirit of this voice is revealed in its verses’ tones and a melody for every avenues of interpretation for singers and ultimate vocal vibrations. No matter how mathematical these lyrics are spoken, one can see their spontaneity and how ethereal some are, as well as grounded. The author is somewhat connected to a full range of different moulds. Therefore, a variety of mainstream themes, concepts, or close impressions and intimate, sensitive or dry, ideas and feelings confront flexions, and judgements of societies and people from all walks of life and backgrounds. As well, reasoning, positions and perceptions, or encounters are pictured along these lines.Just about anyone can relate to this display of tangents and dimensions exposed in flows and full streams of poetry; somewhat a little “academic” for the amateur of abstract. Verve and zest appear drilled, yet it is a brilliant manoeuvre of the French language one cannot obtain overnight, unless inherited and captured by the spirit of the language’s muse. The author’s ideas stem from a wide field of comparison in terms of settings sheexperienced closely, in urban or rural life, and various milieus out of different social classes. She senses and observes problematic situations with a knowledgeable drawback. At times, she is so much in tune, in a timeless fashion, most likely thanks to her whereabouts in space. In this case,
 Diaries 1907-1914: Prodigious Youth
Diaries 1907-1914: Prodigious Youth
$41.16
Sergey Prokofiev, a compulsive diarist and gifted and idiosyncratic writer, possessed an incorrigibly sardonic curiosity about individuals and events. When he left Russia after the 1917 Revolution, his diaries were recovered from the family flat in Petrograd and later hidden at considerable personal risk by the composer Nikolai Myaskovsky. Prokofiev himself smuggled them out of the country after his first return to the Soviet Union in 1927. The later diaries, written in the West, were brought back by legal decree after the composer’s death in 1953, to be kept in an inaccessible section of the Soviet State Archive. Eventually Prokofiev’s son Sviatoslav was allowed to transcribe the voluminous contents. When he and his son Sergei eventually emigrated to Paris, they undertook the gigantic task of reproducing the partially encoded manuscript in an intelligible form.Diaries, 1907-1914, the first of three volumes that extend to 1933, covers Prokofiev’s years at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire. Simultaneously attached to and exasperated by the tradition exemplified by composers such as Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov, and Tcherepnin, the brash young genius relishes the power of his talent to irritate, challenge, and finally overcome the establishment. In candid and lively prose, he records the all-too-normal preoccupations of a young man making his way in the brilliant social and artistic circles of the prewar Russian capital. Virtually every artist and musician of note appears in these pages, in penetrating and not always flattering vignettes. Prokofiev’s main subject, however, is music, its creation and its performance. He reveals his own developing aesthetic principles through his assessments of the works of others, even as he composes such early masterpieces as the First and Second Piano Concertos, The Ugly Duckling, the First Violin Concerto, and the Classical Symphony. An inexhaustibly rich portrait of a vibrant artistic culture on the edge of war and
The Visigothic Council of Toledo organized the Hispanic rite (Visigothic or Mozarab are variant terms) in 633. The main source of on the Hispanic rite is the León Antifonary (tenth century), which was most probably copied from an original collected in Beja (now in Alentejo, southern Portugal). The Beja region is home to one of the earliest mentions of a musician, in the activity of Andre Princeps Cantorum (489 – 525). The oldest manuscript (eleventh century) of Portuguese liturgical music in Toledan Hispanic notation is kept at the University of Coimbra General Library. Most other existing documents use Aquitan notation. From the middle of the thirteenth
 Ezra Pound: Poems and Translations
Ezra Pound: Poems and Translations
$14.99
Poetic visionary Ezra Pound catalyzed American literature’s modernist revolution. From the swirling center of poetic change he excited the powerful energies of Eliot, Joyce, and William Carlos Williams and championed the Imagism and Vorticism movements. This volume, the most comprehensive collection of his poetry and translations ever assembled, gathers all his verse except The Cantos. In addition to the famous poems that transformed modern literature, it features dozens of rare and out-of-print pieces, such as the handmade first collection Hilda’s Book (1905-1907), late translations of Horace, rare sheet music translations, and works from a 1917 “lost” manuscript. Pound’s influential Cathay (1915), Lustra (1917), and Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (1920)-as surely as his later masterly Confucian odes and Sophoclean dramas-followed the poet’s own directive to “make it new,” opening fresh formal pathways into ancient traditions. Through these works and others representing more than 30 different volumes and dozens of pieces that Pound never collected, Poems and Translations reveals the breadth of his daring invention and resonant music: lyrics echoing the Troubadors and Browning, chiseled 1920s free verse, and dazzling translations that led Eliot to call Pound “the inventor of Chinese poetry for our time.” An extensive chronology offers guidance to Pound’s tumultuous life. Detailed endnotes of unprecedented range and depth clarify Pound’s fascinatingly recondite allusions. Author Biography: Richard Sieburth, editor, is professor of French and Comparative Literature at New York University, author of Instigations: Ezra Pound and Remy de Gourmont, and editor of Pound’s Walking Tour in Southern France and Pisan Cantos.
 Gustav Mahler
Gustav Mahler
$243.43
The life of the brilliant composer and conductor Gustav Mahler was punctuated by crisis. His parents both died in 1889, leaving him the reluctant head of a household of siblings. He himself endured a nearly fatal medical ordeal in 1901. A beloved daughter died in 1907 and that same year, under pressure, Mahler resigned from the directorship of the Vienna Opera. In each case Mahler more than mastered the trauma; he triumphed in the creation of new major musical works. The final crisis of Mahler’s career occurred in 1910, when he learned that his wife, Alma, was having an affair with the architect Walter Gropius. The revelation precipitated a breakdown while Mahler was working on his Tenth Symphony. The anguished, suicidal notes Mahler scrawled across the manuscript of the unfinished symphony revealed his troubled state. A four-hour consultation with Sigmund Freud in Leiden, Holland, restored the composer’s equilibrium. Although Mahler left little record of what transpired in Leiden, Stuart Feder has reconstructed the encounter on the basis of surviving evidence. The cumulative stresses of the crises in Mahler’s life, in particular Alma’s betrayal, left him physically and emotionally vulnerable. He became ill and died soon after in 1911. At once a sophisticated consideration of Mahler’s work and a psychologically acute portrait of the life events that shaped it, this book extends our thinking about one of the great masters of modern music.
But even on Thanksgiving the curious little monkey manages to stir up some trouble! Follow George through his Thanksgiving adventures with the short poems in this board book. The fun, tabbed pages are perfect for little fingers!Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city’s famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.
Harp Music Bibliography Supplement
This book is designed to complement Harp Music Bibliography: Compositions for Solo Harp and Harp Ensemble (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1995). The IU Press title has 3356 entries; the supplement has almost 3000 entries, nearly doubling the total number of listings of works for harp. Following the design of the earlier title, the Supplement contains citations for harp music published between 1800 and 2000 in a classified arrangement: 1) Method books; 2) Orchestral studies; 3) Solos (original works for harp); 4) Solo arrangements (arrangements of works originally for other combinations of instruments); 5) Harp ensembles; and 6) Arranged harp ensembles. Each entry includes information needed to accurately identify a work, including uniform titles when needed, publisher information, pagination when available, and complete contents listings for anthologies. Following the main sections is an index of names and titles. Specifically excluded are manuscript and rental material, student theses and dissertations, and reprints by the same publisher. Finally, there is an index of music playable on non-pedal or folk harps.
 History of English Music
History of English Music
The British musicologist Henry Davey (1853–1929) was a noted scholar of the manuscript sources of Tudor music. He published the first edition of History of English Music in 1895 with the aim of providing his fellow-musicians with the first clear scholarly account of the full range of English musical achievements. His main focus is the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which he considered the heyday of English music, and he claims that the earliest known free instrumental compositions, as well as the polyphonic style, originated in England during the fifteenth century. In Davey’s view, these controversial findings were his most important contribution to general musical knowledge. His work was widely discussed in his own time, attracting both praise and aggressive criticism, and continues to be read with great critical interest today, not least because of its parallels with the socialist utopianism of Ruskin and Morris.
 Hollywood Foto-Rhetoric: The Lost Manuscript
Hollywood Foto-Rhetoric: The Lost Manuscript
The portrait of a very young Bob Dylan on the cover of The Times They Are a Changin is probably one of the most recognizable and famous album covers of all time. Photographer Barry Feinstein took that photo, as well as many more of Dylan throughout his career. His images have been published throughout the world many times over, and have become synonymous with our perceptions of that place and time in rock and folk music history. Inspired by a series of photographs that Feinstein took in Hollywood during the 1950s and 60s, Bob Dylan wrote an extraordinary series of poems that have remained unpublished for decades. They are thought-provoking, witty and erudite observations of the world; through the lens of Feinstein’s photographs, they speak volumes about the anonymous faces and places of Los Angeles, and offer wry commentary on images of stars and legends in the neighbourhood at the time. Photos of Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland float through the book, as do poignant images of starlets, casting couches, employment agencies and palm tree’d boulevards. Feinstein was there with a camera to capture some world-famous events, such as Marilyn Monroe’s memorial service, and he photographed the forgettable moments, preserving them perfectly and timelessly. Bob Dylan’s unsettling and distinctly unique perspective informs and enlivens every page, an irresistible interpretive voice narrating the visual images from photo to photo.
