Excerpt: Archbishop Holgate’s School Archbishop Holgate’s School is a voluntary aided Church of England , coeducational secondary school in York , England .History The school was founded as Archbishop Holgate’s Grammar School in 1546 by Robert Holgate , the then Archbishop of York . The original grammar school was in Ogleforth near York Minster . In the 1800s it was referred to as “The Rev. Shackley’s School”, and James Cooke taught there. During this transition period the outdoor swimming pool was converted to an indoor pool, a new sports hall was built, and upgrades were made to music, design and technology, home economics and other facilities. The school’s facilities now include an indoor heated swimming pool , a chapel and a boathouse on the River Ouse . In 2009 a two-storey, curved-roof learning centre with landscaping, |

Accidental Human Deaths In Kentucky $9.05 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Stan Rogers, Mel Ignatow, Charles “Speedy” Atkins, Bob Clark, A. J. Bakunas, Fred Zahner, Ed Glenn, Reddy Mack. Excerpt: Stanley Allison “Stan” Rogers (November 29, 1949 June 2, 1983) was a Canadian folk musician and songwriter. Rogers was noted for his rich, baritone voice and his finely-crafted, traditional-sounding songs which were frequently inspired by Canadian history and the daily lives of working people, especially those from the fishing villages of the Maritime provinces and, later, the farms of the Canadian prairies and Great Lakes. Rogers died in a fire aboard Air Canada Flight 797 on the ground at the Greater Cincinnati Airport at the age of 33. His influence on Canadian folk music has been deep and lasting. Rogers was born in Hamilton, Ontario, the eldest son of Nathan Allison “Al” and Valerie Rogers (née Bushell), two Maritimers who had relocated to Ontario in search of work shortly after their marriage in July 1948. Although Rogers was raised in Woodburn, Ontario (a community in the easternmost part of Hamilton), he often spent summers visiting family in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. It was there that he became familiar with the way of life in the Maritimes, an influence which was to have a profound impact on his subsequent musical development. He was interested in music from an early age, reportedly beginning to sing shortly after learning to speak. He received his first guitar, hand-built by his uncle Lee Bushell, when he was five years of age. He was exposed to a variety of music influences, but among the most lasting were the country and western tunes his uncles would sing during family get-togethers. Throughout his childhood, he would practice his singing and playing along with his brother Garnet, six years his junior. … More: |

Crossover Jazz Guitarists: Wes Montgomery, Larry Carlton, Grant Geissman, Ronny Jordan, Steve Laury $9.05 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: John Leslie “Wes” Montgomery (6 March 1923 – 15 June 1968) was an American jazz guitarist. He is generally considered one of the major jazz guitarists, emerging after such seminal figures as Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian and influencing countless others, including Pat Martino, George Benson, Emily Remler, Kenny Burrell and Pat Metheny. Montgomery was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He came from a musical family; his brothers, Monk (string bass and electric bass) and Buddy (vibraphone and piano), were jazz performers. The brothers released a number of albums together as the Montgomery Brothers. Although he was not skilled at reading music, he could learn complex melodies and riffs by ear. Montgomery started learning guitar relatively late, at the age of 19, by listening to and learning the recordings of his idol, guitarist Charlie Christian. He was known for his ability to play Christian solos note for note and was hired by Lionel Hampton for this ability. Many fellow jazz guitarists consider Montgomery the greatest influence among modern jazz guitarists. Pat Metheny has praised him greatly, saying “I learned to play listening to Wes Montgomery’s Smokin’ At The Half Note.” In addition, Metheny stated to the New York Times in 2005 that the solo on “If You Could See Me Now,” from this album is his favorite of all time. Joe Pass said, “To me, there have been only three real innovators on the guitar—Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, and Django Reinhardt,” as cited in James Sallis’s The Guitar Players and in his Hot Licks instructional video. In addition, George Benson attests, “Wes had a corn on his thumb, which gave his sound that point. He would get one sound for the soft parts, and then that point by using the corn. That’s why no one … More: |

Dixie Chicks Concert Tours $10 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Fly Tour was the Dixie Chicks’ 2000 concert tour in over 80 cities in North America in support of their album Fly. Announced in mid-April 2000, this was the Dixie Chicks’ first headlining tour. Moreover, the group was jumping directly to playing mostly in arenas. Since the sudden jump in the group’s success in 1998, they had played as a supporting act for Tim McGraw and as part of the George Strait Country Music Festival and Lilith Fair, seeking to expose themselves to diverse audiences in building a fan base. The live reputation the group developed for their instrumental prowess and performance strengths led to them embarking upon an ambitious, high-profile, large-venue tour of their own. Begun at the start of June 2000 with five dates in Canada, and with occasional two-week breaks in between legs, the tour was originally scheduled to end in September. However, after having grossed over $25 million for about 50 dates, and averaging about 13,000 fans per show, it was extended until early December, when it concluded with four dates in the Chicks’ native Texas. In terms of commercial impact, LiveDaily termed the tour “a runaway success”, and it came at a time when the country music genre was in a box-office slump. It represented an innovation in a business sense, as three different promoters were used, covering different geographical regions of the country, rather than the more typical use of a different local promoter at each stop.
